A research infrastructure devoted to technology transfer activities.
The SABINA project concerns the consolidation of the SPARC_LAB research facility, which includes the SPARC photoinjector and the FLAME power laser, with the aim of improving performances and increasing the facility’s operating time. Two user lines will be put into operation, available for applications both in the industrial and in the research field.
The first line involves the use of THz radiation produced by the SPARC electron beam injected into a high-tech undulator. The radiation will have a variable wavelength (10-100 µm) with the possibility of circular / elliptical polarization. The second line involves the use of the FLAME power laser with pulses of 800nm wavelength, a duration of less than 30fs and a peak power of hundreds of TW, that will be focused on solid targets.
Many research fields are involved, with a large number of technological implications:
SABINA represents part of the activities of the linear accelerator SPARC, the Italian node of EUROFEL. The project is therefore intended as an enhancement of a structure that will see its completion in EuPRAXIA@SPARC_LAB.
The main goal of the project is the strengthening of the SPARC_LAB Research Infrastructure, in order to increase the competitiveness of the regional research and innovation system and to boost the industrial and entrepreneurial network.
SPARC_LAB is an infrastructure of excellence from a scientific point of view. However, it must be strengthened in its ability to transfer technological innovation to the market, acting to create new skills to be applied in the world of work.
The combination of SABINA with LATINO, the other INFN infrastructure, represents the opportunity of creating at LNF a technological hub that will stimulate the scientific and industrial community for the development of technologies related to the physics of accelerators.
The SABINA project is among the winners of the public call “Research Infrastructures” by Regione Lazio, aimed at creating an infrastructure for increasing the competitiveness of the regional research and innovation system.
The overall cost of the project is about 6 million euros. Regione Lazio co-finances the project with an amount of approximately 4.5 M€. The grant will be devoted to upgrading of laboratories, instruments and equipment, and updating of technological systems and plants.
