NOVEMBER 2023 – NEW LOW LEVEL RF SYSTEMS READY FOR INSTALLATION AT SPARC_LAB

The characterization and calibration phase of the new Low Level RF systems, acquired as part of the SABINA project, has been completed in the RF laboratories of the LNF. The systems are now ready for installation in the SPARC_LAB bunker. Thanks to the collaboration with Instrumentation Technologies, the three S-band systems and the C-band system have been completely renovated and digitized, overcoming the limitations in resolution and stability in amplitude and phase compared to the previous devices commissioned in 2006. These systems consist of a temperature-stabilized analog front-end and an FPGA-based digital processor. New features include arbitrary definition of the RF pulse shape and two types of independent feedback: one on the amplitude and the other on the phase of the RF signals.

NOVEMBER 2023 – PURCHASE OF SOLENOIDS COMPLETED

These new solenoids purchased will replace those previously installed, guaranteeing better performance through better control of the electron beam. They are built with 12 magnetic coils inserted inside a yoke, that can be aligned individually for a more accurate alignment between the magnetic center and the mechanical center.

AUGUST 2023 – SABINA PRESENTED AT THE SILS CONFERENCE

The SABINA project was presented at the annual conference of the Italian Synchrotron Light Society (SILS) with the contribution entitled “The SABINA Terahertz/Infrared Beamline at SPARC-Lab Facility”.

JULY 2023 – NEW UNDULATORS APPLEX DELIVERED

These instruments allow the creation of FEL radiation in the THz frequency range. They are unique tools in the world for obtaining THz light with different polarization possibilities. There are 3 in total and they will guarantee SABINA users very high performance. They all arrived at the laboratories, two were positioned immediately near the beam line, ready to be installed, while the third was used to carry out some further experimental mechanical deformation tests.

NOVEMBER 2022 – THE SABINA PROJECT PRESENTED AT TERADAYS
During the workshop “Spectroscopy, Imaging and Innovative Technologies for THz Radiation” organized between Italian researchers to be able to compare and collaborate on the different technologies that Terahertz radiation offers, the SABINA project was also presented. The presentation focused on presenting the infrastructure and performances that we will be able to offer to future users.

JUNE 2022 – COMMISSIONING OF THE SABINA MODULATOR COMPLETED

The new modulator purchased within the SABINA project has been successfully installed and tested. This guarantees and will guarantee continuous and efficient use of the accelerator, essential to be able to offer our future users a stable and continuous test.
This instrument is currently operational at SPARC’s modulator room.

MARCH 2022 – PHOTOCATHODE LASER DELIVERED

This is the instrument that allows the production of the electrons that will then be accelerated. A high quality of the laser corresponds to a high quality of the electron beam. In fact, acceptance tests have already been carried out to guarantee the required performance.

JULY 2021 – HERE IS THE CLEAN ROOM FOR USERS OF THE THz LINE

The keys to SABINA’s clean room were delivered. Together with other building upgrades, this clean room is important precisely because it will be the new user lounge. It is composed of two rooms: entrance with vestibule and experimental room. The experimental room will host instruments available to users such as the cryostat or laser.

MARCH 2021 – PHOTOINJECTOR COMPLETED

The assembly of the new SPARC photoinjector, created as part of the SABINA project, has been completed. The installation is scheduled for April and May 2021, involving all the Services of the Accelerator Division and the Technical Division. By taking advantage of cutting-edge manufacturing technologies, it will allow an improvement in performance in terms of the properties of the electron beam produced, also solving some difficulties that arose due to the aging of the previous photoinjector (used continuously since the early 2000s).

MARCH 2021 – THIRD PLENARY MEETING OF THE SABINA PROJECT

The third plenary meeting of the project was held remotely, which saw the participation of over 40 colleagues from INFN and other research institutions. In addition to an update on the general status of the project, the focus of the meeting was the organization of the planning of the installations, through the preparation of a GANTT of the activities.

DECEMBER 2020 – PROJECT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE IPAC21 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Three contributions relating to the SABINA project were submitted to the IPAC21 conference (International Particle Accelerator Conference). The titles and authors of the contributions are as follows:

– “SABINA: a Research Infrastructures at LNF” (L. Sabbatini et al.), for the session Applications of Accelerators, Technology Transfer and Industrial Relations

– “FEL design elements of SABINA: A Free Electron Laser For THZ-MIR Polarized Radiation Emission” (F. Dipace et al.), for the session Photon Sources and Electron Accelerators

– “The SABINA Terahertz/Infrared beamline at SPARC-Lab facility” (S. Macis et al.), for the session Photon Sources and Electron Accelerators

SEPTEMBER 2020 – SECOND PLENARY MEETING OF THE SABINA PROJECT
Due to the current restrictions linked to the state of the pandemic, the second plenary meeting was held in mixed mode (presence-remote), with the participation of over 40 INFN colleagues and collaborators from other bodies. The managers of the various working groups made a brief report on the progress of their activities. The administrative and bureaucratic indications for the correct implementation of the project were also recalled.

SEPTEMBER 2020 – AFFIXING OF PROJECT PLAQUES
During the renovation work on the signage of the National Laboratories of Frascati, the new plaques relating to the SABINA project were affixed: one at the main entrance on via Enrico Fermi, the others on the buildings where the activities relating to SABINA will be carried out.

JANUARY 2020 – FIRST PLENARY MEETING
During the first plenary meeting of the project, the medium and long-term activities were carefully outlined with particular emphasis on the timing of the project. A report of the activities of the various working groups was presented.

SEPTEMBER 2019 – KICK-OFF MEETING
The kick-off meeting’s goal was the preparation of the work of the entire project. It started from the creation of a shared space for documentation and the organization of working groups to proceed with the implementation of the project towards the definition of bureaucratic and administrative procedures. The plenary meetings will take place on a six-monthly scale, and they will serve to share the general situation of the project with the community, while the various working groups will each follow their own timetable.

AUGUST 2019 – PROJECT START NOTICE
The SABINA project was among the winners of the Public Notice of the Lazio Region “Strengthening of the PNIR research infrastructures to raise the innovation rate of the regional productive fabric”. It will therefore be co-financed with an amount of €4.5 million by the Lazio Region, on POR FESR 2014-2020 funds, for the creation of a research infrastructure at the National Laboratories of Frascati which will also be made available to external users.
